Brendan Frey

Founder & CEO

Brendan Frey is a Canadian-born entrepreneur, engineer and scientist. He is Founder and CEO of Deep Genomics, Co-Founder of the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence, and Professor of Engineering and Medicine at the University of Toronto. He co-invented one of the first deep learning methods called the ‘wake-sleep algorithm’, the affinity propagation algorithm for data summarization, the factor graph notation for probability models, and a coding method that helped to form the 802.11 Wi-Fi standard. He led a twelve-year project to build AI systems that accurately model genome and cell biology, which led to the founding of Deep Genomics, the discovery of a new way in which genes may be activated in brain tissues, the first AI system for predicting pathogenic mutations and identifying therapeutic targets, and the development of new therapies for patients with serious genetic disorders.
